Year-round vegetable production courtesy of solar-heated greenhouses

The wood-burn ing furnaces of Wenkai Oriental Vegetables near Winnipeg were rarely called upon last winter. Manitoba vegetable grower Wenkai Liu is able to grow year-round in his solar-heated greenhouses. He says that he had to fire up his wood-burning furnaces just three times last winter. "My total fuel usage last winter was about 100 pounds of wood." Even during the coldest winter nights, the temperature in his greenhouses never fell below zero, and on sunny days the temperature inside hovers around 15°C.
