Long-time ornamental grower moves into open roof design

J.C. Bakker and Sons Limited is a family run nursery located in the heart of the Niagara region. The Bakkers have been in business for nearly 50 years, and are growers of a wide range of woody ornamental plant material. Prior to 1995, all their propagation took place in 20'xlOO' cold frames. While having served their purpose for many years, these types of structures have some drawbacks that limit their use. Uniform temper- atures are hard to maintain, with summer temperatures sometimes being too high, and winter heat loss sometimes too excessive. With a large number of such structures, manageability becomes a problem. Snow loading and wind loading are other factors to be considered.
