What happened to mid-'60s loonie?

For many in horticulture, the loonie's rapid appreciation has been painful. About 30 years ago, Canadian and U.S. currencies were equal. Conditions now are similar to then: the Canadian economy is strong, there's general unease with U.S. foreign policies (then with respect to Vietnam, now with Iraq), and energy costs are rising (James Brander, Vancouver Sun, Sept. 21). Because Canada is a strong energy exporter, when energy costs rise, so too does the value of the loonie.
