A light-tolerance gene could extend tomato-growing possibilities. Alight-loving tomato gene discovered by a University of Guelph researcher could help Canadian greenhouse producers extend their crops' growing period. The baby of the tomato family, adwarf cultivar called the Micro-torn, holds the key to better light response, says Prof. Barry Micallef, Department of Plant Agriculture. He's found that this tiniest tomato cultivar has a gene that helps the plants tolerate longer days during the summer, and take better advantage of supplemental lighting in the winter.
