This paper follows on fiom the article, "FAO agricultural production index numbers", which appeared in Vol. 7, No, 1 of the bulletin. It presents results from a further review of the FAO production index that was undertaken by the FAO Statistics Division, During the review process a number of issues were identified for closer examination. Two issues are considered here: the first relates to the conceptual framework underlying the treatment of production of livestock and related agricultural production with the aim of identifying possible improvements to the methodology of the production index. Limitations of the availability and the quality of livestock data are also considered. The second issue concerns the question of constructing the production index at the level of total or final output The deduction of seed, feed and processed feed poses an important, related measurement problem which has its roots in the present FAO database and the basic framework of the economic accounts for agriculture.
