The Sussex fowl can lay claim to being one of the oldest British breeds and is a firm favourite with poultry keepers in the UK; the Light being by far the most popular of the available colours. Many newcomers think the Light Sussex is a breed in its own right and mistakenly call it 'White Sussex,' failing to realise that a separate self-White version of the breed exists, along with many other colour options. It is not known whether the original colour was distinctly what we know today as 'Brown' or 'Red' back in 1903 when the Sussex Poultry Club was formed by Edward Brown. In those days such fowls were ambiguously called 'Brown/Red' and showed a great level of variation in plumage colouration. It is cited that Speckled Sussex developed with mottledtips to their feathers from crosses of the aforementioned and possibly other breeds.
