The author Sir Edward Brown gave all his working life to the furtherance of poultry keeping and made a special study of the history of different breeds. This book represents a major contribution to the understanding of how different races emerged to form the standard breeds that are known to us today both in England and Europe. In the book's preface the author writes of the importance of not allowing the decline of certain breeds so as they go to the point of extinction, not only here in England butin other countries like France, Holland, Germany and Russia. He makes notes that the birds indigenous to each country are declining in numbers due to lack of knowledge about their origin, and consequently determined an opportunity to visit these countries in order to evaluate the qualities of these domestic birds.
