Developing a district nursing workforce with advanced skills, for care at home

In the continuing climate of economic uncertainty, service delivery must be cost effective, safe and appropriate with staff having the skills for the roles they undertake. A literature review was prepared to inform a primary care trust (PCT) of the issues inherent in delegating the administration of medication in the domiciliary setting, and the findings were considered important to share in both the health and social service domains. Research relevant to the safety issues in the administration of medicines was referred to, as well as several policies that were useful in demonstrating a range of examples from practice.
