Ammonia rig accident injures driver, sends one tank 650 feet into cornfield

The driver of a pickup truck pulling two anhydrous ammonia nurse tanks was still in critical but not life-threatening condition in a hospital at Rockford, Ill., Thursday, Dec. 12, with burns from ammonia released when he lost control of the rig and one of the tanks exploded just outside of Edelstein. In what industry authorities described as an extremely rare occurrence, the ruptured tank flipped over and exploded, and was propelled approximately 650 feet into anearby cornfield.
