MIKE HERRING: As the greenhouse industry strives to find ways to be more efficient, lower cost and improve quality, there have been great advancements in two areas in particular — material handling and product grading. One such area in material handling is automated shipping systems. For many growers, their shipping system, or lack of it, is one of the most challenging areas of their business. Shipping systems are especially suited for growers of young plant product who ship smaller orders to multiple customers at the same time. A shipping system integrates into the customer's existing ERP or production computer software program and works direcdy off of the master pick list. It fundamentally changes the normal shipping scheme by bringing the product to the correct cart lane and providing simple, error-free instructions of the exact cart location and shelf position for staff loading the carts.
