Echinacea: Old-time species and new hybrids provide exceptional garden perennials

Until about 5 years ago, most Echinacea (coneflowers) found in gardens were selections of purpurea. As its name implies, flowers were found in shades of purple to pink or white. The classic purple coneflower, E. purpurea 'Magnus,' with its extra-large, rosy-purple flowers, horizontally-held petals and long season of bloom, was named Perennial Plant of the Year in 1998 by the Perennial Plant Association.
