Northern gardeners can only dream of flower color as snow blankets their fall-planted pansies. At the same time the mild Florida winters allow the University of Florida to conduct its seed-propagated bedding plant trials. A best-of-class evaluation system is used to evaluate the garden performance of commercially available pansy varieties. The trials and evaluations are meant to be a tool that can assist growers, landscapers and consumers in selecting cultivars best suited for their climates. A pansy cultivar that does well in another climatic zone may be in for shock when it's planted in Southern soils.
