Apple orchards in northern Italy are productive and highly mechanized. Bruce Allen, president of Columbia Reach, a grower-shipper from Yakima, Washington, who was part of the international group that visited Italy, said he was surprised by the high Italian yields and orchard uniformity. "They've applied theory very well, as seen in the uniformity of orchards," he said. "It would be hard to pick out the growers who are the winners and losers just by looking at their orchards because all of the blockslook uniform and productive.
