TIP # 1: BUY THE RIGHT DETECTOR: If you intend to find nuggets using a metal detector, your key to success is in buying the best and most recent model of gold detector on the market. While you may have a 10-year old detector in good working order, the newer models far exceed the capabilities of older detectors. They are capable of finding the smallest of nuggets in highly mineralized ground and able to detect nuggets at far greater depths than older models. In fact, you can find nuggets up to three or four times the depth of most older models, even those that are just three or four years old. Electronic circuits have improved ten-fold with each passing year. If you don't believe it, just take a look at the ads in back issues of any computer magazine. In 1997, a one GB (gigabyte) hard drive was something to crow about. Three years ago, a hard drive with 10-14 GB was what you got when you bought a top-of-the-line computer. Today, however, 80 to 120 GB is common. Just as these improvements result in better and faster computers, so does the circuitry found in today's high-end gold detectors-circuitry which allows you the choice of using one of three frequencies to increase your chances of finding nuggets. Almost every detector manufacturer, including Garrett, Minelab, Fisher and White's, offer these improvements in their top-of-the-line units.
