Back in the day, when each town had several gem and mineral shops, and folks watched Leave it to Beaver and Star Trek on black-and-white TV, the gold and gemstone trade was simple and the traders were few.Rock shops relied on local miners to supply a small number of gemstone collectors, while some shops stocked their shelves with more exotic specimens from trips overseas to Africa or South America.During the late '60s and '70s, there were rock shops everywhere. Folks bought Pet Rocks and Mood Rings as our culture searched for gems of wisdom or perhaps to be "Like a Rolling Stone." I recall that time vividly and have noticed enormous change since those good ol' days.
