Nevada ranks as one of the nation's leading producers of gold, although most of the output these days is derived from cyanide leaching of low-grade gold ore recovered from large open-pit mining operations. For example, there has long been an open-pit mining operation at Round Mountain, a company town that's located a few miles north of the ghost town of Manhattan in the heart of Nevada. More recently, another such operation has opened up that's located northwest of Nevada's ghost town of Can-delaria. The ruins of Candelaria can be found scattered along a gently sloping hillside between Nevada's Excelsior Range and the Monte Cristo Mountains. It's nestled in a world of salt flats among a gallery of ghosts, within a radius of a dozen miles in west-central Nevada.
