Otago native Glen Grindlay has replaced former general manager Adriaan van Kersen, who has been transferred by Newmont Mining Corp as general manager of its Tanami gold mine in the Northern Territory. During his three years at the helm, Van Kersen oversaw the staged closing down of the Waihi township's iconic Martha Pit opencast mine, and the simultaneous launching of the Favpna underground project. Before serving as general manager at Waihi, van Kersen was operations manager, and between the successive roles he played a major hand in defusing the anti-mining sentiment in the Coromandel region. This became so intense at one stage that the Thames/Coroman-del District Council attempted to get a ban on mining into its statute books, only to be foiled by the Environment Court.
