Adherence to different drugs in patients with type II diabetes

Introduction: Poor metabolic control in type II diabetic patients leads to a higher risk for long term complications. (UKPDS 33, UKPDS 34) The average adherence rate of drugs used by diabetic type II patients varies between 36 and 93%. (Cramer, 2004) Unreported side effects and lack of confidence in benefit are recorded as the main predicting factors for suboptimal adherence. (Grant et al,, 2003; Sabat6, 2003) Adherence rates vary between various oral anti-diabetic drugs in diabetic type II patients (Cramer, 2004), however it is unknown what factors predict adherence rates in different therapeutic drug classes.
