New Warnings, Recommendations on Switching from HFO to MDO/MGO at Sea

California's Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR) late last month issued a warning to ship operators switching from heavy fuel oil (HFO) to marine diesel oil (MDO) or marine gasoil (MGO) as required by California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations. The report analyzes recent U.S. Coast Guard loss of propulsion (LOP) reports, which show a huge jump in LOP incidents caused by ships switch-ing from HFO to MDO or MGO. The fuel-switch aims to slash marine die-sel air pollution near California ports, as required by CARB regulations.
