U.S. DOE to Restart Renewable Energy Loan-Guarantee Program

Months after suspending loan guarantees following the collapse of U.S. government-subsidized solar-power developer Solyndra, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is about to restart the loan program. In an April 5 letter to U.S. Sens. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), DOE loan programs acting executive director David Frantz explained that last year’s federal budget agreement reached by U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) “provided an additional US$170 million in loan loss reserve funding to support Section 1703 loan guarantees that could not be funded under the expiring Section 1705 loan guarantee program that was funded by the Recovery Act.”
