The Los Angeles basin for decades has been an ugly symbol of North American air pollution – blamed mostly on emissions from millions of gasoline- and diesel-powered cars and trucks. But thanks to California’s adoption of the world’s toughest clean-fuels and clean-vehicles standards, volatile organic-compound (VOC) emissions in metro Los Angeles have plummeted 98% over the last 50 years – and 50% since 2002, according to a new study by the U.S.
