Obama Orders U.S. EPA to Force Existing, New Coal Plants to Cut GHGs

In a June 25 speech at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., U.S. President Barack Obama announced that he had ordered the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to issue rules forcing both existing and future coal-fired power plants to slash greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions. A new EPA rule covering new power plant carbon-dioxide (CO2) emissions must be proposed by September 20, 2013, under Obama’s order. The agency last year had proposed a version of a CO2-limits rule for new power plants, but that proposal had languished – until now.
