Greens Prod IMO to Force Polar Ships to Switch to MDO, Ban HFO

With the International Maritime Organization (IMO) having already banned combustion of heavy fuel oil (HFO) by ships operating in Antarctic waters, now environmental groups are pushing for similar action in Arctic waters A new report from Friends of the Earth, titled The Case for a Strong Polar Code, urges IMO to ban HFO in Arctic shipping and instead require ships to switch to relatively low-sulfur, cleaner-burning marine gasoil (MGO) or marine diesel oil (MDO).
