Ukraine to Start Building Coal-Gasification Plants for SNG

Ukraine Energy and Coal Minister Eduard Stavytsky announced January 9 that construction would begin on coal-gasification plants for synthetic natural gas (SNG) production in September 2014 as part of a strategic plan to reduce dependence on imported Russian natural gas. According to a report from Xinhua news agency, Ukraine’s state-owned Naftogaz just signed a natural gas supply deal with Russia’s Gazprom at US$268 per 1,000 cubic meters. That’s cheaper than the $400 per 1,000 cubic meters for natural gas from other European suppliers, according to Stavytsky.
