NREL Touts Methane-Microbe GTL-Diesel Scheme in U.S.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) on January 3 announced that it will participate in a consortium aimed at employing a microbial technology for converting natural gas (methane) into diesel fuel. This novel gas-to-liquids (GTL) scheme "if successful could reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower dependence on foreign oil," according to the NREL. The consortium won a US$4.8-million Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E) award from the DOE.
