U.S. New-Vehicle Fuel Efficiency Better than CAFE Standards

A new study by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) finds that U.S. new-vehicle fleetwide fuel efficiency in 2012 and 2013 actually beat the U.S. federal corporate average fuel-economy (CAFE) standards. “For the two model years completed under the current standard (2012 and 2013), the achieved performance levels exceeded the anticipated [CAFE] levels by 0.2 mpg [miles per gallon] and 0.1 mpg, respectively,” according to the UMTRI.
