The importance of certification of fruit plant material - control of virus diseases.

The production regulation "Ordinance on the Marketing of Plant Material of Vegetable, Fruit and Ornamental species repealing the ordinance on the control of Virus diseases of Fruit Production", which has been in force in Germany since July 1998, stipulated two quality categories for fruit plants: (1) standard material (CAC*) and (2) recognized, certified material. Reliable virus testing is only required for pome- and stone fruits in the certified material category. Such fruit plants must have beenproduced in compliance with controlled step-by-step production. Virus testing of the plant propagation material as well as the control of the plant material and the subsequent issue of certificates is conducted by the plant health agencies of the federalGerman states upon application.
