Intoxications with citalopram - two divergent cases

Introduction: Citalopram is an anti-depressant within the group of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) and is one of the most prescribed SSRI's in the Netherlands, together with paroxetin and amitriptylin. The acute toxicity of SSRI's in humans has been reported to be considerably less than that of tricyclic antidepressants. The two following cases illustrate that citalopram overdose can result in unpredictable clinical courses that can be unexpectedly life threatening.
