Full Sun, Partial Sun? Full Shade, Partial Shade? - What's a Gardener to Do?

Sun or shade, when used by gardeners, the terms can have a multitude of variations. Is a garden which gets a few hours of morning sun, but shade during the rest of the day considered to be shade, partial shade, or partial sun? The terms sunny and shady are open to interpretation. Most sources agree that full sun is at least six or more hours of direct sunlight per day. Shade, on the other hand, is defined as lack of sunlight. Plants need sunlight to produce food through photosynthesis. As we all know, very few plants actually thrive in deep shade. Therefore, full shade usually means less than two hours of sunlight a day or at least six hours of shade. Most of the light reaching a shaded plant has been reflected many times, thereby losing most of its energy, leaving little for the plant.
