There are only a few pieces from the hands of Geoffrey Payne still in his family's possession, and thus available for illustration here. This group includes two now very damaged plaques and a trial made for a heraldic shield. I have added an illustration of an unsigned enamelled roundel [set into the lid of an early 20th century box], that can perhaps be ascribed to the same maker. Despite the few available examples, these demonstrate the principles of the Art Enamellers of the early 20th century as followed by Geoffrey Payne. As a designer-enameller, his subjects were atmospheric woodland scenes and architectural subjects. The aim was to make significant images, created with high-fired glass enamels, producing tantalising colours and ephemeral translucent hues only possible with these materials and techniques.
