Annealing Method of Henry Bone

Finding this article was a happy moment. Twenty years ago, we obtained an enamel, by Henry Bone, painted in 1816. It is excellent work, however it is definitely undulated with a large healed-over crack on the back side. A few years later, we obtained two enamels, by Henry Pierce Bone, painted in 1850 and 1851. Again, excellent work, but these had no undulations. The backs show signs of being fired on a refractory material such as whiting. It is interesting to note Henry Pierce Bone was 72 when he painted the 1851 enamel, and he had been enameling 58 years at the time. He died in 1855, so he may have enameled close to 62 years.
