THE GLOBALIZATION OF BIOETHICS: THE TASK OF INTERNATIONAL COMMISSIONS

Supranational bioethics commissions today play a decisive role, not only in the discussions and debates over the different challenges bioethics continually pose, but also in the elaboration of documents and declarations of international and global impact. These commissions have borne fruit, for instance, in the approval of the Universal Declaration on the Human Genome and Human Rights1 and the International Declaration on Human Genetic Data, as far as the International Committee on Bioethics of UNESCO is concerned. The European Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine3 is also, to a great extent, the result of the work done by the Directive Committee for Bioethics of the Council of Europe.
