Fibre Lasers defy economy

Fibre lasers were introduced recentlyin comparison to legacy technologies such asCO_2, but the technology has been adoptedrapidly within key markets, particularlyindustrial materials processing and medicallasers. According to a report recentlycommissioned by the European PhotonicsIndustry Consortium (EPIC), the market forfibre lasers has grown from 105m in 2005to 300m in 2008, equating to a compoundannual growth rate of 42 per cent per annum.Analysis shows that materials processing applications continue to be the most importantmarket sector, accounting for 70 per cent of the2008 market (210m), which equates to sevenper cent of the worldwide market for lasers inmaterials processing, estimated in the report tobe worth 3bn in total.
