Actinobaculum schaalii recurrent urinary infection in a centenarian patient

We present the case of a 101-year-old woman with a previous transient cerebral vascular accident at the age of 95 years. Since then, she had repeated urinary tract infections by various microorganisms. The clinical course of the recent episodes started with restlessness, urinary incontinence and smelly cloudy urine. Urine was screened for adenosine triphosphate detection by luminescence (Coral Biotechnology, San Diego, CA, USA), with high value results. Samples were cultured by standard methods with negative results after 24 h of incubation. Because of the high positive screening results and urine leukocyturia, agar plates were reincu-bated with CO_2 atmosphere. After 48 h, the growth of tiny colonies of Gram-positive pleomorphic small rods was seen.
