Awake bruxism in a patient with Alzheimer's dementia

Bruxism is a stereotyped movement disorder of tooth grinding or clenching.1 Unlike sleep bruxism, awake or diurnal bruxism is not a sleep disorder, but is secondary to disorders of the central nervous system, such as Parkinson's disease, stroke and advanced dementia. Besides causing tooth damage, temporomandibular disorders and headache, awake bruxism has a poor remission rate and can lead to depression.
