Perception or reality - waste, landfill and the environment

When Einstein was asked to define the environment he gave the excellent answer' everything that isn't me'. This article is about Einstein's environment, and its protection. There has been much talk much talk in recent years of the waste hierarch and the need to achieve the best practical environmental option (BPEO) when dealing with materials. The principle of both the hierarchy and BPEO is that it is important to cause as little damage to the environment we will make the world unpleasant or difficult to live in. When making things, therefore, we should try to minimize waste - i.e. to get as much raw material as possible into the end product rather than on the waste heap. There are several other stages in the waste hierarchy and /or searching for the BPEO before one gets to waste disposal at the bottom (Gig.1).
