2011 History of Oil Symposium in Ohio

Since the turn of this century, the Petroleum History Institute (PHI), a non-profit professional society, has organized the annual History of Oil Symposia (see Geology Today, 2009, v.26, p.205; 2010, v.27, pp.167-168).The 2011 History of Oil Symposium was held in Marietta, Ohio, on 23-25 June 2011. The historical town of Marietta (founded in 1788, and once an oil boomtown) is located on the banks of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers, and today has a population of about 15000 (Fig. 7). Marietta is a short drive from the cities of Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Parkesburg which have airports. The eastern part of Ohio is part of the Appalachian Basin dominated by Palaeozoic sedimentary rocks (Fig. 8). Marietta College, one of the oldest in the USA, is well known for its petroleum geology and engineering departments (Fig. 9).
