Philip Andrews writes from New Zealand Fifty years is not a particularly long existence for an institution, but nevertheless the fiftieth celebration of the Geological Society of New Zealand is significant. For around 90 years, until the Society's formation in 1955, geologists held membership of the New Zealand Institute and its successor the Royal Society of New Zealand. One factor for the Society's formation suggested by Bruce Hayward, compiler of the latest history of the Geological Society of New Zealand, 'was the success of the... annual NZ Geological Survey conferences, to which University and Museum geologists had begun to be invited.' The first Society conference had been held at Kaikoura (in an area famed for its Cretaceous reptile finds), in the South Island, and so the fiftieth conference was also held there, in December 2005.
