On 29 November 2004 the law concerning Sites of Special Scientific Interest in Scotland was overhauled by the Nature Conservation (Scotland) Act. The Act strengthens the laws on wildlife crime and modernizes the system of designating and protecting Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The Act not only enhances the protection available to Scotland's natural heritage, including its geodiversity, but also gives Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) the duty of preparing the 'Scottish Fossil Code'. Designed to foster responsible collecting, the voluntary 'Scottish Fossil Code' will provide advice on best practice in the collection, identification, conservation and storage of fossil specimens found in Scotland.
