Natural aggregates in the performance and durability of concrete: chemical characteristics

The surface of good, well-designed and made concrete will generally withstand attack from a wide range of substances but surface damage will result if concrete is brought into contact with acids or substances that become acidic. Portland cement is alkaline and is very susceptible to acid attack, which can lead to loss of the fine matrix material in concrete, exposing the coarse aggregate-which fails as it eventually becomes unsupported because of the loss of the matrix.
