David Nowell writes Folded editions of two of the three 1:50 000 maps replacing the one-inch to the mile (1:63 360) special sheet covering Northern Shetland have been published recently, with fine colour photographs of the rugged coastal scenery on their front covers and an index map of Scotland and the area covered by each map on the back. The Northmaven map (sheet 129) is named after the isolated peninsula which forms the northernmost part of the Shetland mainland, on the western side of Sullom Voe, the deep inlet famed for its oil terminal. In addition the map covers the Yell Sound and the area around Graven on the other side of Sullom Voe. To the northeast, on the other side of the island of Yell (sheet 130), the islands of Unst and Fetlar (sheet 131) are covered by the other new map. Northern Shetland consists overall of a series of complex fault-bounded tectonic blocks divided up by a series of north-south faults and related thrust plains with distinct geological histories, until they were assembled by Caledonian mountain building movements between Scandinavia, eastern Greenland and the rest of Scotland as these neighbouring landmasses collided.
