USE OF A DIGITAL TERRAIN MODEL AS A MEANS OF URBAN WATERSHED DELINEATION IN FREDERICTON, NEW BRUNSWICK

This study examines digital terrain model (DTM) datasets available for the Fredericton, New Brunswick, area and proceeds to use the provincial DTM dataset for a watershed delineation analysis required by the Fredericton Area Watersheds Association (FAWA). The analysis involves comparing two delineation processes. The first is a manual process using the DTM and-as a check-an existing digital hydwlogical network. The second is fully automated using only the DTM. A comparison reveals that the automated solution produced false results in certain areas. In general, the existing provincial DTM is not capable of recognizing all the hydwlogical features in an urban system, characterized by small watersheds and requiring larger-scale data. Therefore, additional elevation and topographical datasets need to be utilized in the watershed delineation process. The main recommendation made is that a combination of the two delineation procedures should be adopted by FAWA.
