The Himalaya have fascinated Western explorers ever since two 17th-century Jesuit missionaries returned to Europe with tales of the Forbidden City of Lhasa. But it probably wasn't until 1856, when Mount Everest was identified as the world's highest peak, that the great mountain range entered the broader consciousness of the British public.
