THE ART OF HEALING: AN ADAPTATION OF THEHEALER'S ART COURSE FOR FOURTH-YEAR STUDENTS

This "Innovations in IntegrativeHealthcare Education" columndescribes a successful adaptationof the Healer's Art, a course devel-oped by the esteemed and highly re-spected physician teacher Naomi RachelRemen. As described below, this programis widely used in medical schools acrossthe country. Healer's Art has a focus onprofessionalism, self-awareness, self-care,and enhancing the spirit and art of heal-ing. Drs Geary and McKee attended train-ing to teach this program under the tute-lage of Dr Remen and the Commonwealteam. They then brought it back to theirhome institution, the University of TexasMedical Branch, Galveston, Texas, wherethey adapted it in light of curricular re-quirements and their own special skillsand interests in mind-body medicine. Ithas been enormously popular among thestudents here. Their description gives a vi-brant account on how such a course canbe implemented at various points in thefour-year curriculum.
