Fresh water is a finite and vulnerable resource, essential to sustain life, development and the environment. Water requirement is expected to exceed water supply in the near future if existing water sources are not managed effectively and no other water sources are identified and explored. Effective management links land and water uses across the whole of a catchment area or groundwater aquifer. The participatory approach involves raising awareness of the importance of water among policy-makers and the general public. India is blessed with adequate rainfall as a whole, yet there are large swathes of dry, drought prone area. Objective of this paper is to study 'rainwater harvesting ’ as a potential way-out to meet excess water demands in the fastest growing cities in India like Bengaluru.
