Get Together: Connecting a Research LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) with an ELN (Electronic Laboratory Notebook)

The connection of a research LIM system from Central Analytic Services (CAS) with the ELN at Merck KGaA Darmstadt has proven to be fruitful for both sides. The ELN users at the side of the preclinical pharmaceutical development and liquid crystal research submit their orders electronically and receive their results the same way. This article deals with some aspects of the implementation and quality gains that have been made possible by that project. Overlooking the variety of products in the market being sold as LIMS and/or ELN one might ask for the differences between LIM and ELN systems. Most LIM systems deal with batches, samples, quality performance indicators, deadlines and cost. Some LIMS extend their realm with workflow management and raw data archiving.
