Jury is still out on economic feasibility of syngas refueling

A recent utility study estimated the total cost of converting a natural gas-fired 350-MW combined cycle plant at USD22.5 million but concluded the syngas fuel is too pricey at present to warrant the investment. Heightened concern over natural gas price volatility and supply uncertainty has increased the interest of many gas turbine owner operators in the possibility of modifying combined cycle plants to burn syngas as a potential replacement fuel.
