Space Age Technology for the Gas Stream

The Mars Polar Lander mission in 1999 may have failed to achieve its objective of communicating information from the planet back to NASA headquarters on Earth, but it has been successful in terms of its relations to the natural gas industry. As part of the mission, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) designed a TDL (tunable diode laser)-based absorption spectroscopy gas analyzer to study the Martian atmospheric gases.
