Before the storm, ethane had lost its position as the cheapest feed to propane. At its new higher price in September, C2 would be primed to stay in second place in the following month. However, propane prices are also higher, partly due to a spike in propylene demand from the chemical industry, which drove propylene prices up 8 c/pound. “This was panic buying driven by fear of shortages from the refinery shutdowns,” says Dan Lippe, principal of Houston’s Petral Worldwide, source of these tables. Lippe expects propylene prices to fall back by 3-5 c/pound in October and November.
