US officials streamline offshore oil and gas permitting regime

Officials in the US responsible for assessing oil and gas offshore permit applications have announced “significant improvements” in the regime, which they hope will speed up the permitting process. Among the improvements announced by the Bureau for Ocean Energy Management Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) is the development of clear permit review priorities, a permit application checklist for applicants, and a new process of “completeness checks” to be carried out by BOEMRE before staff begin assessing the application.
